Santaneco
Coffee grinder and pour over
Santaneco is a coffee grinder and pour-over device inspired by Café de Maíz, a traditional Salvadoran drink made from roasted corn blended with coffee.
Designed for a contemporary lifestyle, it reinterprets a familiar preparation process through modern form and thoughtful execution.
How is traditional Cafe de Maiz made?
Café de Maíz is traditionally made by roasting corn, grinding it, and blending it with coffee before brewing. The process takes time and attention, becoming part of the experience rather than just a step toward consumption.
How can the preparation of Café de Maíz be reimagined for contemporary living?
During the initial exploration phase, rough mock-ups were built to study user interaction and preparation flow.
Through this process, pairing a grinder with a pour-over system emerged as the strongest direction — translating the traditional preparation of Café de Maíz into a contemporary format.
This phase explored how the grinder and pour-over could connect within a single system. Rapid sketches tested different proportions, transitions, and structural relationships between the two components.
After exploring multiple configurations, the direction was refined into a clearer system. Proportions, transitions, and component relationships were adjusted to create a more cohesive and balanced form.
